Questions and Answers
Here are some of the most frequently asked questions of Touye Moun Horror Publishing author Michael Machung.
Why did you become a horror writer?
I’ve always had a dark imagination. Before my college years, I had spent hours writing fright stories and drawing the characters in those tales and I enjoyed it a lot! So I figured what better way to express my imagination than through creative writing and drawing And so, when I enrolled in college, I had taken a plethora of those courses on the side. Another factor that led me in this direction was the lack of originality in the movies we watch: there’re too many remakes and it’s time new ideas get presented and brought to fruition.
Who inspired your ideas?
The Twilight Zone has always been my favorite horror/scifi program and the one writer whom I derived the most inspiration from is Richard Matheson. He wrote many popular episodes for the series namely Third from the Sun which dealt with extreme paranoia in relation to the start of the Cold War at that time. But the paranoia was justified as a nuclear holocaust had unfolded. And not to mention the plot twist when we find out that catastrophe had occurred on an alien world and the survivors are heading to earth to live out the rest of their lives. Then we have Nightmare at 20,000 Feet, which takes place on an airplane. We then get introduced to a young William Shatner who plays a passenger who thinks he’s going insane when he witnesses a gremlin on the airplane’s wing-excellent story. Among his other famous works was Duel where you see a traveling salesman getting harassed by a semi whose driver is never identified thus leaving many questions unanswered. So the suspense and the terror worked jointly in producing good thought provocation. Consequently, I thought his ideas were outstanding examples of great writing, the way storytelling should be.
Do you accept story ideas?
Only if they’re original, captivating, horrifying, and thought-provoking.
How can I get your autograph?
By purchasing through my online website: www.darkhorrorbooks.com. Any book or art print that is purchased from there, the client will receive it autographed. Among other ways, I am always open for art commissions where I will do a sketch or a painting for a client (plus the artwork will be framed), book signings, especially at Barnes and Noble and other book stores. I’ll be doing signings at horror conventions as well, namely Mad Monster Party. My website will keep everyone updated on appearances and upcoming releases.
Do you teach writing courses or conduct seminars?
Those are considerations at the moment.
What is your religion?
Roman Catholic
What is your political affiliation?
Independent.
Will there be a sequel to The Empyrean?
I have in mind making it into a trilogy. The second volume will be called The Empyrean II: The Wrath of Cornelius and the third part will be called The Empyrean III: The Sixth Chamber. The former will deal with the government’s battle with The Temple of the Divine Circle while the latter will drift off in an Orwellian territory where mass surveillance acts as a threat to the Divine Circle.

What is your favorite part about being a writer?
Actually, I have many favorite parts. Character development is the first one. It gives me a chance at designing a person, figuring out a special name for him, and, more importantly, deciding what type of personality he needs that would work well within the story. Then there’s conceiving of a good backstory for that individual. That’s where it really gets involved. Another aspect of writing I enjoy is engaging in discourse with the literary public on my works, especially hearing their opinions and viewpoints regarding a protagonist or an antagonist and their motives. Lastly is feedback. It’s always delighting when the readers demand a sequel. That’s when I realize that I had done something great, a feeling that’s incomparable to any other.
